My first impressions of this kit is that it displays itself as a very premium beginner beer making kit with all the bells and whistles someone new to the home brewing game would require. There is a lot of components in the box for the price, which left me feeling quite impressed with what was included. If you’re a beginner looking for the next step up with a slightly more advanced kit this could be for you.
This is one of the few kits that includes its own bottles which is a positive thing. Although they are only plastic, this makes them easily sanitized and then reused many times over, stopping you having to shell out on glass bottles until you are fully satisfied that your brew is up to your required standards. The large fermenter included with the set is very good and exceptionally easy to clean, although one small problem is that the lid can sometimes become a bit hard to remove, but isn’t that much of an issue with a bit of upper body strength. Also included are a few extras, such as the beer hydrometer to monitor fermentation, and a bottling wand to make the beer brewing process to bottling that much easier.
There is only one extract mix that comes with the kit, which is a bit of a let-down, as it would be nice to be able to try a couple of different beer mixes before deciding to buy more refills. As this is an extract beer making kit there is not much customisation involved, which is prefect for those just starting out, but if you’re looking for the full custom experience you may be better off going for something a little more advanced. The one thing included with this beer making kit as opposed to other basic kits is the brew enhancer mix, which is recommend to replace standard white sugar. This mix is supposed to improve the beer making process and give the beer a better flavour, as well as a creamer, longer lasting head. This is a welcome addition as many basic home brew beers end up feeling a little flat.
Throughout the brewing process things were kept simple and easy to understand and by following the instructions step by step, the brew went very well from start to finish and filled me with the knowledge that very little could go wrong.
After testing the finished brew the resulting beer was light, crisp and refreshing, which sort of reminded me of fosters, which is a similar light lager. I did feel that using the brew enhancer made a dramatic increase in the overall taste of the beer and was toughly impressed with the results.
To sum things up this is a very impressive beginner’s kit, with a good quality finished product which will keep you coming back for more. This is the ideal stepping stone to graduate from a beginner looking to learn from their first beer making kit to starting your journey to finding the perfect custom beer.
